Bennett Hartman provides training workshops for labor union clients and their members. These trainings are provided free of charge for labor union clients to educate their membership and leadership on important legal issues. General Interest:

Wage and Hour: This workshop addresses wage and hour issues present in a unionized workforce such as Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) violations, overtime, and failure to pay proper wages on time.

Workers’ Compensation: This workshop addresses the workers’ compensation arena with advice on how to handle and what to do in the case of a workplace injury.

Employment Discrimination Issues: This session deals with the law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, sex, age, disability, national origin, and sexual orientation.

Sexual Harassment: This workshop deals with sexual harassment in the workplace, the current state of the law and how unions can assist members who believe they have been sexually harassed.

Family Medical Leave and Disability Protections: This workshop addresses the protections provided by the Oregon and Federal Family Medical Leave Act as well as the disability protection statutes. Topics covered include intermittent leave, eligibility, notice, and reinstatement rights.

Military Leave: This workshop addresses the federal protections for employees who are on military leave.

Social Security/PERS Disability: This workshop outlines the process and issues associated with Disability benefits available for private and public employees.

Education Employee, Health Care Employee, and Public Employee Workshops:

Child Abuse Reporting: This session deals with employees7rsquo; roles, responsibilities, and risks in reporting of child abuse.

Teacher Non-Renewal, Dismissal and Suspension: This session deals with the finer points of the law concerning non-renewals and dismissals under Oregon law.

Teacher Licensing: This session deals with Teacher Standard Practices Commission, their opinions on misconduct and the process used by the Commission.

Free Speech: This session reviews court decisions on the free speech rights of public employees, using copyrighted material and other intellectual property.

Public Employee Retirement System (PERS): This workshop provides an update on the most recent developments in the Oregon Public Employer Retirement System and related litigation.

Privacy: This workshop reviews federal and state laws protecting student (FERPA), patient (HIPAA), and/or employee records.

Nurse Licensing: This workshops reviews the disciplinary process used by the Oregon State Board of Nursing, do’s and don’ts for interviews, and likely outcomes in disciplinary cases.

Union Leadership Education:

Grievances: This workshop is for union stewards and other local leaders on grievance handling strategies and processes.

Member/Member Conflicts: This workshop provides strategies for a union’s role in member vs. member conflict.
